# Zero-click search rate

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

[Zero-click search](/en/resources/glossary/zero-click-search) rate is the proportion of searches that end without a click to a website, according to the definition and dataset used. In assistant studies, the unit may be a task involving several [prompts](/en/resources/glossary/prompt) rather than a single query. The calculation divides units with no click by the valid units observed, using the same criteria for both counts.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, the rate helps show when an interaction stays within the answer, but it does not by itself indicate satisfaction, influence, or a later purchase. Profound published a study of product comparison tasks in [ChatGPT](/en/resources/glossary/chatgpt) that found few meaningful clicks to the web. Its results apply to the sample and protocol, and do not automatically represent all assistant use or all searches.

## Example in practice

Imagine an agency observing forty comparison tasks in a defined test. Ten lead to websites and thirty end without an outbound click; under this protocol, the rate is 75%. When comparing another study that excludes brief clicks, the team notices the criteria differ. It retains its own test result and records the difference, without treating the two percentages as directly equivalent measures.

## How to apply or verify

State the unit, scope, period, click destination, and how you handle abandonments, repeated clicks, and unavailable data. Check whether the study observes real behavior, instructed tasks, or an aggregated click dataset. In [Search Console](/en/resources/glossary/google-search-console), CTR divides clicks to the site itself by its impressions; subtracting this value from 100% does not measure all zero-click searches across all websites.

## Important distinctions

A task with no click is not necessarily a task completed without a decision. Selecting options in a study is also not equivalent to making a purchase. Rates based on queries, users, or tasks have different denominators. Content consumed in an answer may influence a later action, but the absence of an observed outbound click does not, by itself, show which brand gained or lost a sale.
