# Zero-click search

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

A zero-click search is a search that does not result in a click to an external site, according to the analysis's definition and observation window. The person may get information in the interface itself, rephrase the question, or end the task. In AI experiences, a direct answer may meet part of the need without requiring the user to open a source.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this means that incoming traffic does not describe all brand exposure. A person may learn about an option, remember its name, and visit the site later through another path. At the same time, no click does not prove that commercial influence occurred. Analysis should keep presence in responses, observed browsing, and buyer actions separate.

## Example in practice

A user asks for criteria for choosing a platform, reads the answer, and notes down two companies. The next day, they search for one of them on Google and request a demo. The first search ended without an external click, but may have played a part in the journey. Without additional evidence, the report cannot attribute that conversion to the answer or consider it irrelevant.

## How to apply or verify

When using a study, check the population, platform, period, and definition of a click. Do not apply percentages from one survey to the entire internet or to your segment. When tracking your brand, combine response metrics with traffic, conversions, and qualitative research. Optional questions about how the customer learned about the company can supplement records, with the limitations of memory and responses.

## Important distinctions

Zero clicks do not mean zero value, zero attention, or zero sales. They also do not mean every user was satisfied. It is a description of behavior observed under a particular method. Marketing goals should reflect the task and journey, avoiding replacing a visits metric with a mentions metric without explaining what each can show.
