# Wikipedia notability

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Wikipedia notability is the editorial criterion used to assess whether a subject may warrant a Wikipedia article. In the Portuguese-language edition, the general rule considers significant coverage in reputable, independent sources; topic-specific criteria also exist. Meeting the criteria establishes a presumption, subject to the other policies. Fame, commercial importance, and follower count are not the same assessment.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this distinction helps assess promotional proposals that promise to create an article based on press releases or superficial mentions. Material produced by the organization itself does not demonstrate independence. The team needs to examine who investigated the subject, how thoroughly it was covered, and what evidence supports an encyclopedic article. Buying exposure does not replace editorial assessment of notability.

## Example in practice

Imagine a ceramics company presenting ten republications of the same press release as proof that it qualifies for an article. On checking their origin, the team finds a single announcement from the company itself, repeated without independent reporting. It decides to seek substantial coverage produced by third parties and assess the relevant criteria before proposing an article, without treating the URL count as approval.

## How to apply or verify

Identify the Wikipedia edition and the general or topic-specific criteria that apply to the subject. Separate independent references from advertising, press releases, and self-published content; check depth, authorship, and the source's relationship to the organization. Record which facts each source supports. People connected to the subject should consider conflicts of interest and community discussion, without presenting their assessment as a final inclusion decision.

## Important distinctions

Notability is not a [domain authority](/en/resources/glossary/domain-authority) score or a guarantee of appearing in [AI responses](/en/resources/glossary/ai-response). A subject may meet the criteria and still need sufficient sources, neutrality, and an appropriate format. [Wikidata](/en/resources/glossary/wikidata) has its own rules for accepting items. The absence of an article also does not show that a company is unknown, irrelevant, or unable to receive legitimate coverage.
