# Wikidata

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Wikidata is an open, collaborative, multilingual knowledge base that organizes information as [structured data](/en/resources/glossary/structured-data). Its items represent entities and have identifiers beginning with Q; statements link properties to values, with references and possible connections. The database supports Wikimedia projects and can be reused by third parties. It is not a collection of articles written like those on Wikipedia.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, looking up an item can help identify the names, organizations, and relationships associated with a public [entity](/en/resources/glossary/entity). This requires examining the statements’ references, not just recognizing the name. A similar description may refer to another institution, and outdated data may remain in the database. Verification should preserve the identity and temporal context of the information.

## Example in practice

Imagine a museum finds two items with similar names: one represents the institution, the other the historic building where it is located. The team checks descriptions, location, and references, realizing that the construction date was interpreted as the museum’s founding date. It records the distinction and consults the editing guidelines before proposing a correction to the corresponding statement.

## How to apply or verify

Search for existing items and compare the identifier, description, statements, and references before suggesting changes or creating another record. Check that the source supports that value for the correct entity. Wikidata has its own acceptance criteria, including public references for identifiable entities or structural needs. Document the rationale and follow the project guidelines, without inserting disguised promotion.

## Important distinctions

An item in Wikidata does not imply that a Wikipedia article exists about the same entity. The projects have different purposes and criteria. The identifier can support an identity link, but it does not prove that every search engine or model consults that record. The database may also contain discrepancies and errors; openness to reuse does not make every statement sufficient evidence.
