# WebMCP

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

WebMCP is a proposed web interface for exposing a page's functions as structured tools to agents. Descriptions and schemas indicate what can be called, while execution uses the application in the browser. The October 2, 2026 document is a preliminary community group report, not a W3C standard.

## Why it matters for marketing

For those planning digital experiences, it matters whether a task can be explicitly offered to an agent. A support form, for example, can present fields and a defined action, reducing reliance on visual interpretation. Evaluation should consider the browser used, the page implementation, and the user's control over the action.

## Example in practice

Imagine a site that receives quote requests and is experimenting with WebMCP to prepare the form. The tool describes the product, quantity, and contact details. If the agent enters the quantity in a different field than the one specified, the team would have concrete evidence to correct the schema or execution before expanding the test to this form.

## How to apply or verify

Ask the development team for a demonstration in the browser and version actually selected, with a record of the exposed tool and the arguments sent. Compare the entries with the form fields and check the confirmation required for submission. Chrome documents access for prototyping through its early preview program; this announcement does not confirm support in all browsers.

## Important distinctions

WebMCP is not the same as publishing a remote [MCP server](/en/resources/glossary/mcp-server). The proposal works with page functionality and shared context in the browser, while a remote server offers an interface accessed by clients. Exposing a tool also does not automatically make the page cited or recommended in search results. Compatibility, authorization, and the effect of the action still need to be verified.
