# Visibility ranking

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Visibility ranking is the ordering of brands by [visibility score](/en/resources/glossary/visibility-score) within a comparison set of questions or topics. In Profound's terminology, Visibility Rank compares a brand with its competitors within that scope. Its unit is a position on the calculated list; the score used, time window, and included brands need to accompany the number for it to be interpretable.

## Why it matters for marketing

Relative position helps identify competition within a topic, but it can change as competitors move. A brand can rise without improving its own score. Therefore, a marketing team should read rankings and absolute values together before directing content or presenting progress to leadership. Changing the competitor set also changes the available comparison.

## Example in practice

Suppose a logistics company tracks four brands in the refrigerated delivery topic. In one hundred responses that mention at least one brand, they appear in 50, 40, 40, and 20 responses. The team records the tie between the two brands with a score of 40% and decides to examine the questions in that topic, without claiming that one outperforms the other.

## How to apply or verify

Check the time period, filters, set of brands, and score formula before comparing positions. In Profound's current documentation, Visibility Score counts responses with at least one brand in the denominator. Also check how the tool handles ties and rounding; if the rule is unavailable, state this limitation and preserve the scores shown in the report.

## Important distinctions

Visibility ranking does not indicate the order in which a brand was written in a response or the position of a link in a search engine. It also does not measure sales or market share. The tie policy in the example is a stated analytical convention, not a description of Profound's internal implementation or that of all providers.
