# Variability in retrieved sources

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Variability in retrieved sources is the change in the set of documents obtained by an [AI search](/en/resources/glossary/ai-search) system when the same question is repeated. The items observed are pages, passages, or URLs available during [retrieval](/en/resources/glossary/information-retrieval). Comparison requires logs from separate runs and documented conditions, because the final answer may hide some of these sources.

## Why it matters for marketing

When a page appears in one collection and disappears in the next, marketing teams need to assess whether this is a persistent change or a sample fluctuation. A single capture is not enough to conclude that the site has gained or lost access to answers. Tracking how often sources recur helps prioritize content investigations without attributing every change to a recent edit.

## Practical example

Suppose a team repeatedly asks which packaging can hold hot food. In three comparable runs, retrieval logs show an alternation among a technical standard, a catalog, and a news article. The team identifies which document supports the temperature limit and decides to revise its own product sheet, rather than concluding that its occasional absence means it was blocked.

## How to apply or verify

Ask the person responsible for data collection for logs of retrieved sources, when the integration makes them available. Preserve URLs, timestamps, questions, models, and search settings; compare sets and recurrence by document. If the interface shows only citations, record this limitation. In that case, the analysis describes variation in the links shown, without claiming to reveal all the material retrieved.

## Important distinctions

Sources can change while the text remains similar; the text can also change while using the same documents. Therefore, [answer variability](/en/resources/glossary/response-variability) and retrieval variability are different things. In OpenAI's Responses API web search, the list of consulted sources is distinct from citations in the text. This inspection capability should not be assumed for other interfaces.
