# utm\_source=chatgpt.com

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

utm\_source=[chatgpt](/en/resources/glossary/chatgpt).com is the parameter that OpenAI says it automatically adds to the referral URLs of ChatGPT Search results. Its value identifies ChatGPT as the source for analyzing visits from that surface. This does not show that it is included in every link from the service. The tag can be copied or added manually, so it does not authenticate who generated or shared the URL.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this value provides a source clue to check against data collection and reporting rules. [Google Analytics](/en/resources/glossary/google-analytics) receives UTM parameters and displays them in acquisition dimensions, depending on the configuration. A declared source alone does not resolve channel classification, information loss, or the visit’s contribution to a purchase made later.

## Example in practice

Imagine a consultancy finds a link with utm\_source=chatgpt.com in an email from a partner. The URL was copied from a conversation and retained the tag. When evaluating visits from that promotion, the team records the sharing and avoids attributing every tagged session to a click made within ChatGPT. It checks the same URL and how it was distributed before interpreting the source.

## How to apply or verify

Check the full value in the received URL, whether redirects preserve it, and which dimension it appears in within the tool. In Analytics, UTM information can be viewed in source and campaign dimensions; it does not appear in every page dimension. Keep naming consistent, since values are case-sensitive, and document the rule used to group this source in the report.

## Important distinctions

The parameter is not equivalent to a [referrer](/en/resources/glossary/referrer) and does not prove presence, recommendation, or conversion in AI. It should also not be treated as a required identifier for every visit from ChatGPT or other assistants. Shared links and manual tagging can retain or produce the same value. Measuring traffic requires interpreting the available signals as a whole and disclosing the scope and gaps in data collection.
