# Unbranded prompt

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

An unbranded [prompt](/en/resources/glossary/prompt) is a question that does not include the name of a specific brand. It describes a problem, category, criterion, or use case. It can also be called a brand-free question. In monitoring, it lets you observe which companies appear without explicitly suggesting a name in the prompt itself.

## Why it matters for marketing

This format helps marketing teams study discovery: which companies make the shortlist when buyers have not yet chosen a provider. Unbranded questions also reveal the attributes and sources that inform comparisons. For a lesser-known company, this assessment is usually more informative than checking only what AI says when prompted with its name.

## Example in practice

“Which platforms help a Brazilian agency monitor its AI presence?” is an unbranded prompt. By contrast, “Does Tropk help agencies monitor their AI presence?” is branded. If the name appears in the second response, that only confirms that the question was answered with the brand provided; it does not demonstrate spontaneous discovery in the first scenario.

## How to apply or check

Choose needs that arise in your audience’s work. Include useful constraints, such as language, team type, segment, or purchasing method, without piling on requirements designed to favor a single company. Group questions by intent and validate the set with sales or customer support. When measuring competitors, use the same baseline and check that the recommendations are relevant.

## Important distinctions

Unbranded does not mean neutral by definition. A question can be biased without mentioning brands, for example by requiring a unique combination of features. It also does not indicate actual search volume. Use this type of prompt as a sample of discovery and complement it with customer data, qualitative research, and observed business results.
