# Transformer

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Transformer is a neural network architecture introduced in the paper Attention Is All You Need. It combines attention mechanisms with other layers to build representations of sequences and, in the original proposal, to produce translations. Attention relates positions in a sequence, while positional information helps represent their order. The name describes the model’s structure, not a specific commercial tool.

## Why it matters for marketing

Understanding the architecture helps you assess vendors’ technical explanations without turning them into business promises. Saying that a tool uses Transformer does not prove its accuracy, how up to date it is, or its suitability for Brazilian Portuguese. The team should ask for results on the intended task and information about the complete system, including the data provided to the model, editorial controls, and any [retrieval](/en/resources/glossary/information-retrieval) of external sources.

## Practical example

Suppose an agency is evaluating a Transformer-based translator. The vendor promises immediate delivery and cites the parallelization of training, but the technical sheet describes an autoregressive decoder, which generates symbols sequentially. The agency recognizes that the evidence presented concerns a different stage and requests a test measuring time per document before accepting the timeline offered in the contract.

## How to apply or verify

Check the model documentation and identify what the application actually does: translation, generation, or another task. To assess translations, keep the input, output, and a human review of relationships between sentences, names, and constraints. Also record the version tested. This procedure assesses observed behavior; it does not reconstruct the architecture or reveal the internal weights of a closed service.

## Important distinctions

Transformer is the architecture; attention is a mechanism used within it. The original paper describes a specific encoder-decoder combination, which should not be assumed for every current product. Its training parallelization benefit also does not mean that all generation happens simultaneously: the original decoder produces the sequence based on the symbols already generated, step by step.
