# Training data cutoff

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

[Training data](/en/resources/glossary/training-data) cutoff is the stated time reference for the collection or coverage of the data used in a given model. The exact interpretation depends on the provider’s documentation. For example, the GPT-2 model card reports training on data through the end of 2017 and places the model in February 2019, showing that these are different dates.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this reference helps assess responses about launches, prices and positioning changes. A model released after a campaign may have data that ends before the campaign. The team should identify how recent information reaches the response and avoid attributing up-to-date knowledge solely to the system’s commercial availability date or the name of the version used.

## Practical example

Imagine a brand that launched a collection in August. It evaluates a model made available in September whose documentation states that its data was collected through June of the same year. The gap between the launch and the data cutoff means you cannot assume the model learned about the collection during training. The team provides the current catalog and checks whether the system consults a recent source.

## How to apply or verify

Check the documentation for the exact version and record the cutoff date separately from the release date. If search or [retrieval](/en/resources/glossary/information-retrieval) is used, also inspect the dates of the sources accessed. In evaluations, use events with known dates and note the configuration. A correct answer about a recent fact may come from the supplied context, without indicating any change in training.

## Important distinctions

The stated date does not guarantee that all earlier facts were learned, nor does it represent a perfect boundary for every topic. The Dated Data study distinguishes this milestone from the [effective cutoff](/en/resources/glossary/effective-knowledge-cutoff) observed by capability. It also does not summarize how current a product is if it consults external sources or receives later updates; these conditions need to be identified in the evaluation.
