# Traffic with no identifiable source

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Traffic with no identifiable source, also called dark traffic, is the set of visits whose origin cannot be determined using the signals available during collection. It may appear as direct traffic when [referrer](/en/resources/glossary/referrer) or campaign information is missing. This does not mean the visitor necessarily typed in the address: the preceding path may exist but not be represented in that report.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this gap limits how clearly acquisition distribution can be understood. Unidentified links, offline documents, and redirects can produce visits with unclear origins. Interactions in assistants should also be evaluated based on the observed path, without treating all direct traffic as [AI traffic](/en/resources/glossary/ai-referral-traffic). Fixing verifiable collection issues is more useful than redistributing unknown sessions based on a hypothesis.

## Example in practice

Imagine a publisher promoting its catalog in a PDF sent to libraries. The links have no campaign parameters, and visits appear with no clear source. When testing the same document, the team confirms the identification gap. It decides to tag the next distribution and preserve the unknown source for previous visits, rather than retroactively attributing them to assistants.

## How to apply or verify

Test relevant arrival paths, checking referrers, parameters, and redirects. Check whether the tool receives these signals and how it classifies their absence. Record which issues have been demonstrated and which remain hypotheses. If you fix a campaign tag, track new visits using the same rule and stated period; do not assume the change has automatically recovered data already collected.

## Important distinctions

An unknown source does not mean there was no influence, but it also does not prove influence from a specific platform. Truly direct navigation and loss of identification may share the same category. Bot visits are a separate matter and need their own identification. A count of sessions with no referrer shows the limits of collection, but does not by itself quantify demand generated by AI.
