# Topical authority

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Topical authority is a term used to describe a source’s credibility and depth in covering a particular subject. In editorial work, it involves demonstrated expertise, coverage of needs, evidence, and coherent relationships between materials. There is no universal public topical authority score issued by search engines that a site can increase simply by completing a set of pages.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, the concept is useful as a criterion for focus. A company can contribute more effectively to subjects related to its expertise than by publishing about every trend. This choice helps concentrate research and review where there is real knowledge. Credibility also depends on how the material supports claims and acknowledges what has not yet been tested.

## Example in practice

An agency documents how it plans migrations, presents issues it has encountered, explains validation criteria, and publishes a study with its methodology. This collection demonstrates experience with a recognizable problem. A hundred articles repeating generic marketing tips may cover many terms but not offer the same evidence. Volume and depth are not equivalent measures.

## How to apply or assess it

Define subjects in which the team has expertise or access to specialists. Map questions at different levels, connect definitions and guides, and keep examples up to date. Review sources, authorship, and relevant gaps. Track audience response, references, and performance, but treat these results as observed signals without attributing a hidden score to the site.

## Important distinctions

Topical authority is not [Domain Authority](/en/resources/glossary/domain-authority), a proprietary metric used by specific tools. It also does not replace technical accessibility or meeting user intent. A source can be trustworthy on one topic and unsuitable for another. Evaluation should consider the specific question and available evidence rather than extending general prestige to every claim published.
