# Topic cluster

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

A topic cluster is an editorial organization of pages that cover a common theme from complementary angles. A [pillar page](/en/resources/glossary/pillar-page) provides an overview, while other pages explore specific questions. [Internal links](/en/resources/glossary/internal-links) connect these parts according to their relationship. The collection should offer useful reading paths, not merely group similar titles into a category.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, a cluster helps determine which topics need their own page and which can fit into an existing section. This map can reveal unanswered questions, repetition, and isolated articles. The team can distribute content planning and maintenance by topic, without treating the number of published pages as a sufficient measure of quality or coverage.

## Example in practice

Suppose a home goods store organizes content about packaging items for shipping. It already has pages about choosing boxes, protecting dishes, and calculating dimensions, but none point to the others. The editor proposes a general guide and links each page to the relevant section, preserving the details specific to each packaging step.

## How to apply or check

List the central topic, the questions addressed, and the existing URLs before commissioning new content. Check whether each page adds a distinct answer and whether the links lead to the promised deeper information. Also review the paths back to the overview. Keep planned pages on the map, separate from those already available to the public.

## Important distinctions

An editorial cluster is neither a universal taxonomy nor a guarantee of [topical authority](/en/resources/glossary/topical-authority), rankings, or citations. Grouping [prompts](/en/resources/glossary/prompt) by similarity is a different activity: it organizes questions, not necessarily pages. A blog category can bring topics together without establishing the relationships found in a cluster. The choice of architecture depends on readers’ needs and the available content.
