# Token

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

A token is a unit used to represent text in a language model’s input and output. Depending on the tokenizer, it may correspond to a whole word, part of a word, punctuation, or another element. The text is converted into a sequence of these units, identified numerically. Therefore, counting words alone does not determine the number of tokens.

## Why it matters for marketing

Tokens matter when a team prepares materials for a tool that imposes input or output limits in tokens. A short brief and a catalog with codes may have different token counts even if they contain a similar number of words. Before splitting a document, check the tokenizer and the stated limit; splitting by page could exclude a crucial commercial term.

## Example in practice

Consider a team preparing to summarize a catalog of industrial parts. It estimates the size by word count, but the tokenizer splits many product codes into several units, exceeding the input limit used in the test. The team measures the file with the corresponding tokenizer and separates the product families, keeping each code together with its description and restrictions.

## How to apply or verify

Identify the tokenizer used by the model and count the text actually submitted, including instructions and additional passages. Check how the tool reports its limits and the space allocated for the response. When proposing a split, make sure names, values, and conditions stay together. Record the count and method used so someone else can reproduce the estimate.

## Important distinctions

A token does not have a fixed length in characters or words, and an average ratio is no guarantee for Portuguese texts. Different algorithms and vocabularies may segment the same text in different ways. A language token is also not an access credential or a financial asset. Non-text content may use its own representations, depending on each system’s documentation.
