# Social source citation

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

A social source [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) is a reference in an [AI response](/en/resources/glossary/ai-response) that leads to content from a community or social platform. It may point to a discussion, post, or video. The object being analyzed is the material linked in the response, along with its authorship and context—not all of the brand’s activity on that network.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this classification helps teams understand which public accounts appear as support for a response. A team may uncover questions that its documentation does not address or outdated information circulating in communities. The decision depends on the cited content: the volume of social references alone does not show whether the brand was mentioned or whether the information is favorable.

## Example in practice

Imagine a camping equipment manufacturer finding an answer about setting up tents that cites a user’s video. The video shows a part from an older model, while the answer describes the current one. The team records the excerpt and decides to publish guidance identifying the models, without attributing a nonexistent complaint to the video.

## How to apply or verify

Open the reference and record the platform, URL, author, available date, and excerpt associated with the claim. Check whether the content matches the product and question being analyzed. In a report, state which platforms are included in the social category and keep responses without citations separate. This rule makes it possible to compare sources without turning classification errors into changes in behavior.

## Important distinctions

A social citation is not the same as a mention published on the network, an interaction with followers, or a visit to the site. It also does not show that the model preferred the platform as a whole. In Profound, Social is a source category; other tools may group communities and videos differently. Compare the criteria before comparing totals.
