# SGE

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

SGE stands for Search Generative Experience, the name of Google's generative answer experiment announced in Search Labs in May 2023. The experience combined information summaries, links, and follow-up questions in Search. In May 2024, Google announced the public expansion of [AI Overviews](/en/resources/glossary/ai-overviews) in the United States, building on this experimentation. SGE is a historical reference.

## Why it matters for marketing

An older report may use SGE to describe interfaces, samples, and access conditions that differ from those today. This difference matters when evaluating content recommendations or comparing study results. Before treating a conclusion from that experiment as guidance for current Search features, the team should identify when the data was collected and which experience was observed.

## Example in practice

Imagine an agency receives a 2023 study about links shown in SGE for travel queries in the United States. The client wants to use it to estimate current clicks in Brazil. After checking the period and experimental access conditions, the agency keeps the study as historical context and requests a current AI Overviews sample to discuss the Brazilian market.

## How to apply or verify

Confirm the date, country, language, and interface in the study or report evidence. Compare the 2023 and 2024 announcements with current Google Search Central documentation. To evaluate the site today, check [indexing](/en/resources/glossary/indexing), eligibility for snippets, and helpful content; Google does not require any specific additional technical implementation to appear in AI Overviews.

## Important distinctions

SGE is not the name of a model or a synonym for all of Google's generative features. Search Labs is the experimentation environment, not SGE itself. AI Overviews and [AI Mode](/en/resources/glossary/ai-mode) are distinct current Search surfaces. Documentation consulted in October 2026 does not turn the old SGE sign-up steps into current access instructions.
