# Sentiment drift

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Sentiment drift is a persistent change over time in the tone [AI responses](/en/resources/glossary/ai-response) use to describe a brand or attribute. Observing it requires a comparable baseline: questions, platforms, language, unit, and rubric must remain identifiable. A difference between two percentages may simply reflect the composition of the data collected, without any change in equivalent texts.

## Why it matters for marketing

For communications, tracking this change helps identify when a caveat becomes recurring on a specific topic. The team can investigate the passages and cited sources before revising messages. This helps avoid attributing a panel fluctuation to a campaign or incident simply because both occurred during the same monitoring period.

## Example in practice

In a hypothetical scenario, a furniture manufacturer is monitored using 20 fixed questions about assembly. Over three consecutive weeks, more responses describe the instructions as confusing, according to the same rubric. The team compares the passages and finds an old manual among the citations. It decides to review the availability of that document and test the same questions again, without claiming that the document caused the change.

## How to apply or verify

Compare series by question, topic, and platform, preserving the original responses. Flag [prompt](/en/resources/glossary/prompt) additions, outages, classifier updates, and changes to the surface being queried. If questions about complaints become more prominent, also recalculate the series using the previous set. Examine citations and page versions as investigative clues; the presence of a source does not prove its causal influence.

## Important distinctions

Sentiment drift describes the observed tone, not a change in consumer opinion. It is also not synonymous with volatility: responses can fluctuate between runs without forming a persistent trend. There is no universal threshold for deciding that drift has occurred. State the duration, magnitude, and comparison criteria, including the uncertainty produced by few classified cases.
