# Search intent

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Search intent is the need a person is trying to meet when they make a query. They may want to learn, find something, compare alternatives, or take action. These classifications are analytical tools, not perfect boxes: the same question can combine learning and commercial evaluation, especially when it includes context and constraints.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, understanding intent helps determine what answer a page should provide. A brief definition may serve someone who wants to understand a term; a comparison requires criteria, limitations, and evidence. When content offers only an institutional overview to someone who needs to evaluate options, the page may be relevant to the topic yet insufficient for making a decision.

## Practical example

“What is [GEO](/en/resources/glossary/geo)?” asks for a conceptual explanation. “How do you measure GEO at an agency?” asks for an applicable method. “Which GEO tool serves clients in Brazil?” seeks purchase options. Creating three pages that repeat the same introduction does not meet these needs. Each piece of content needs an objective and depth suited to the specific problem.

## How to apply or check

Read complete questions, the results presented, customer service inquiries, and customers’ language. Define what readers should be able to do after reading. Use that outcome to choose the format, sources, and next steps. When monitoring AI, compare visibility by intent: a brand may appear in educational queries while remaining absent from questions about choosing a provider.

## Important distinctions

Intent is not determined solely by the presence of words like “best” or “buy.” Context changes the meaning. Nor is there a single required type of content for each category. A guide can have commercial value without becoming a product page. The editorial criterion is to meet a recognizable need and direct readers to the appropriate next step.
