# Search index

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

A search index is an organized structure that makes it possible to find documents from a query. In web search, it can store information extracted from pages rather than relying on reading each site for every search. In AI [retrieval](/en/resources/glossary/information-retrieval), it can also bring together representations of previously prepared passages, as in the original [RAG](/en/resources/glossary/rag) paper.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, inclusion in the index is an intermediate condition between publishing a page and its participation in search. A URL accessible in a browser may not yet be in the collection consulted by the search engine. Identifying this status helps guide diagnosis: [indexing](/en/resources/glossary/indexing) issues should be examined before concluding that the content has lost relevance for the query.

## Example in practice

A clinic publishes a page about preparing for a medical test and confirms that it opens normally. In this hypothetical situation, [Search Console](/en/resources/glossary/google-search-console) reports that the URL is not yet indexed. The team decides to investigate the page’s processing and directives before rewriting the text: availability to visitors does not prove inclusion in Google’s index.

## How to apply or verify

To check in Google, consult the indexing reports and URL Inspection, recording the date and reported status. Compare [crawler](/en/resources/glossary/crawler) access, indexing directives, and the [canonical URL](/en/resources/glossary/canonical). In an internal AI database, request the document’s ingestion record and test a known query. The procedure should match the index the system actually uses.

## Important distinctions

An index is the organized collection; indexing is the process of incorporating and analyzing information for that collection. [Crawling](/en/resources/glossary/crawling) retrieves pages, while retrieval selects material for a query. A live test does not prove indexing; being indexed does not guarantee display, ranking, or [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation). Google’s documentation explains its own index; a result confirmed there does not prove inclusion in indexes used by other search engines or assistants.
