# sameAs

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

sameAs is a [Schema.org](/en/resources/glossary/schema-org) property whose value points to a reference page that unambiguously indicates the identity of the item being described. Depending on the context, it can link an [entity](/en/resources/glossary/entity) to its official website or a corresponding record. The relationship declares identity; it is not a way to collect any address related to, recommended by, or favorable to the organization in that field.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this property calls for care when providing references to the technical team. A partner profile, an industry article, and the company’s official page serve different purposes. A similar name is also not enough to establish equivalence. The review should confirm that each address represents the same entity, avoiding the transfer of information about namesakes or third parties to the brand.

## Example in practice

Imagine a school called Riacho that includes the profile of a namesake institution in another state in sameAs. The team compares the city, activity, and official address, confirms they are separate organizations, and removes the incorrect reference. It then checks which profiles actually belong to the school before including their addresses, preserving the identity of the same institution in the markup.

## How to apply or verify

Read the item that receives the property and open each proposed URL. Compare names, identifiers, and information that distinguishes the entity; do not decide based on the page title alone. Also validate the markup structure and check that it matches the public content. Record references that are removed or replaced, and review the addresses when a profile or identity changes.

## Important distinctions

sameAs does not mean [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation), recommendation, or commercial association. The property belongs to the Schema.org vocabulary, while [JSON-LD](/en/resources/glossary/json-ld) is a way to represent data. A correct declaration may be interpreted by systems that use it, but it does not guarantee disambiguation across all of them, creation of a panel, ranking, or citation. The same URL on multiple sites does not prove that the identity has been recognized.
