# Relationship between rankings and citations

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

The relationship between rankings and citations examines how a page’s position in conventional search is associated with its presence as a source in an [AI response](/en/resources/glossary/ai-response). The comparison needs to define the query, search engine, surface, and period. A cited page may rank well, appear far down, or be absent from the observed results; none of these situations alone explains the source selection mechanism.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, tracking this relationship helps assess whether [SEO](/en/resources/glossary/seo) metrics describe the sources actually cited within the scope of the analysis. An Ahrefs study found AI Overview citations among both highly ranked results and pages outside them. The study distinguishes page blocks from organic links and also records collection changes. Its distribution does not serve as a universal source-selection rule.

## Example in practice

Imagine an agency comparing sources cited in a response with the first ten search blocks for the same query. It then realizes that another report counts only organic links, excluding ads and special features. The team redoes the comparison using the same unit and keeps the two scopes separate, rather than concluding that the percentage change represents a loss of relevance.

## How to apply or verify

Record the query, time, location, and list of cited and ranked URLs. Define what position means and how duplicates are handled. When comparing studies, check [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) extraction, sample, and surface; parsing changes can alter the results. Fan-out-derived queries may be one part of the process, but do not present an unobserved internal pathway as fact.

## Important distinctions

Organic rankings, the order of blocks, and a citation’s position measure different things. Correlation does not show that moving up one position will cause a citation, or that absence from the original query’s results prevents use as a source. A study’s distribution belongs to its method and period. Improving content and tracking both measures require separate objectives and evidence.
