# Referrer

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Referrer is information about the source associated with navigation to a page, when provided by the browser. It may appear in the HTTP Referer header or the document.referrer property, with details limited by the applicable navigation conditions and policies. The value helps identify an observable source, but it does not reconstruct the visitor’s entire path or authenticate the origin of that visit.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, the referrer is one piece of evidence used to analyze visits from search engines, assistants, and other websites. Not every navigation preserves the full address of the previous page. A missing value may result from policies or access conditions, as well as direct navigation. Reports should state what they identify, without counting every visit with no referrer as uninfluenced.

## Example in practice

Imagine a store testing a product link in an assistant demo published on the web. The link uses noreferrer, and the destination page receives the visit without a referrer. The team identifies this configuration and records that the referrer was omitted along that path. It avoids concluding that the visitor typed the URL and checks available campaign data separately.

## How to apply or verify

Examine the landing URL, the received header, or the property used for data collection, specifying which evidence is being analyzed. Check referrer policies, redirects, and link settings along the tested path. Compare equivalent navigation paths before attributing differences to a platform. Preserve the observed limitation in the report, without trying to recover information that the destination was not given in that visit.

## Important distinctions

Referrer and UTM parameters are different mechanisms: the former depends on the referrer provided during navigation; the latter declares values in the URL. The header is spelled Referer, distinct from Referrer-Policy. A policy may transmit only the origin, omit the referrer, or preserve more details. These data alone do not prove a conversion, recommendation, or all previous contacts with a brand.
