# Reciprocal mention

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

A reciprocal mention is an arrangement in which two brands agree to refer to each other in their content. The term reverse mention appears in this sense in Profound’s commercial glossary on [AI search](/en/resources/glossary/ai-search). Reciprocity describes the agreement between participants, while each publication still requires an assessment of its subject, the relationship it presents, and who is responsible for the text.

## Why it matters for marketing

A marketing team needs to recognize when coverage is part of a collaboration, as this changes how it should be interpreted as external evidence. Knowing that there was an agreement avoids presenting two publications as entirely independent validations. Editorial usefulness should be assessed on each page: readers need to understand why the other organization appears in that content.

## Example in practice

Imagine a bicycle manufacturer and a maintenance company preparing guidance on preventive maintenance. They agree that the manufacturer’s guide will mention the partner’s service and that the repair shop’s article will mention the equipment manual. The agency records the agreement and each company’s contribution, classifying the publications as partnership references.

## How to apply or verify

Check both published texts, the collaboration documentation, and any commercial relationships. Record whether the references are text-only or include links, which pages receive those links, and how the partnership is presented. The presence of both names alone does not prove there was an agreement. If there are links intended to manipulate rankings, assess the applicable search engine policy.

## Important distinctions

A reciprocal mention is not synonymous with a [backlink](/en/resources/glossary/backlink) or an independent recommendation. Google cites excessive link exchanges as an example of link spam; this rule does not make every textual reference between partners a violation. The fact that two brands mention each other also does not prove that one publication caused the other, or that reciprocity increased citations in [AI responses](/en/resources/glossary/ai-response).
