# Really Simple Licensing

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Really Simple Licensing, abbreviated as RSL, is an industry specification for declaring [terms of use](/en/terms), licensing, and compensation for digital assets in XML. As of October 2026, the official document identified version 1.0 as a recommendation for implementation, published on December 10, 2025. Its core describes the conditions and mechanisms for associating a license with content.

## Why it matters for marketing

Those who manage articles, images, or databases may need to communicate different permissions for search, training, and answer generation. RSL provides a format for declaring them. The marketing team should identify which materials are covered and which uses it wants to negotiate, with legal support for the terms and technical support for discovery and possible enforcement.

## Example in practice

Imagine an association that licenses part of its photo catalog for educational uses. In a hypothetical test, a client finds the catalog’s RSL reference but interprets the license as covering excluded images. The association decides to fix the link between the license and the images and repeat the test before promoting the catalog as authorized for this use.

## How to apply or verify it

The technical team should validate the XML, the version namespace, and the URLs or paths covered. Check how the client discovers the license, including through an HTTP header or a reference in [robots.txt](/en/resources/glossary/robots-txt), and how it resolves overlapping declarations. If there is a license server, test authorization acquisition and validation separately, recording the results for the asset actually requested.

## Important distinctions

The RSL recommendation is not equivalent to an IETF RFC standard, nor does it demonstrate compliance by all crawlers. Open License Protocol, [Crawler](/en/resources/glossary/crawler) Authorization Protocol, and Encrypted Media Standard are optional extensions for additional functions. Publishing terms does not prove blocking, payment, or authorized use. Licensing also does not guarantee that content will be retrieved, indexed, or cited in AI answers.
