# Query fan-out

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Query fan-out is the expansion of a question into related queries that a system uses to find information. One input can generate searches about different criteria, alternatives, and details before the final synthesis. Google documents this mechanism in its generative experiences; OpenAI also describes rewriting queries and sending targeted searches to search providers.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing and [SEO](/en/resources/glossary/seo), this helps explain why the page consulted does not always match the exact words in the original [prompt](/en/resources/glossary/prompt). The system may investigate price, compatibility, or an implicit constraint. When data is available, these intermediate searches reveal useful ways to study content coverage, without turning every variation into a new page.

## Practical example

When someone asks about software for a Brazilian agency, searches might include client management, Portuguese-language support, and billing in Brazilian reais. A technical page about one of these criteria may support the response even if it does not mention the full question. This example illustrates the mechanism; it does not describe a guaranteed list of queries from any platform.

## How to apply or verify

When data collection exposes the queries, preserve their text, order, source question, and platform. Group equivalent intents and check which sources were presented. Use the analysis to identify missing or poorly explained information. If the system does not reveal the queries, record this limitation rather than reconstructing a likely list and presenting it as observed.

## Important distinctions

Fan-out is not keyword volume, a history of user conversations, or proof that every search resulted in a page being read. It also does not require producing dozens of nearly identical articles. The priority is to cover useful questions with consistent information; often, the fix belongs on an existing, well-organized page.
