# Prompt space

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

[Prompt](/en/resources/glossary/prompt) space is the set of possible requests about a topic, taking into account different phrasings, intents, and contexts. It is not limited to a list that has already been compiled; it also includes variations the team has not yet collected. In visibility research, it serves as a reference for defining the universe a sample aims to represent and identifying what was left out.

## Why it matters for marketing

This definition helps marketing avoid broad conclusions based on convenient questions. A brand may appear in general queries and disappear when budget, location, or specific requirements come into play. If these contexts are relevant to the audience served, they need to be considered in planning. The decision is which situations deserve representation, not how many similar-sounding phrases can fit into the monthly report.

## Example in practice

Imagine a language school that monitors only questions about English courses. While reviewing customer service inquiries to map its prompt space, the team identifies professionals who need evening classes, interview preparation, and low-cost remote courses. The list does not represent these conditions. The coordinator adds questions for each need and narrows the earlier analysis to general queries.

## How to apply or verify

To map the space, combine customer service inquiries with hypotheses about audiences, intents, constraints, and decision stages. Organize these dimensions and choose examples that cover different conditions, including difficult cases. Anthropic’s evaluation documentation recommends tests aligned with the real-world distribution of tasks; this guides the design but does not prove that the resulting sample is statistically representative.

## Important distinctions

Prompt space is a planning term, with no required enumerable universe or standardized count. The [prompt set](/en/resources/glossary/prompt-set) is the specific selection used in a test; clustering organizes similarities within that selection. Adding paraphrases can expand language variety without increasing the diversity of needs. Coverage always depends on the defined scope and available evidence about the audience.
