# Prompt monitoring

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

[Prompt](/en/resources/glossary/prompt) monitoring is the recurring execution of an identified set of questions to track response behavior in AI systems. The process records conditions, results, and analysis criteria, such as brand mentions, cited sources, or factual accuracy. Its basic unit is the response collected under a given condition, linked to the question and the time of execution.

## Why it matters for marketing

A recurring series makes it possible to investigate changes that a single query would not show. For marketing, this helps review how a product is described and which sources appear in the topics being tracked. Comparisons need to keep the scope recognizable: changing the questions or platform may alter the results even when the company’s public content remains unchanged during the period analyzed.

## Example in practice

Imagine a water purifier manufacturer that tracks questions about filter replacement weekly. In archived responses, the team finds recommendations to replace filters quarterly; the manual for the model being analyzed specifies a different interval. The team identifies the cited old page, submits it for correction, and keeps the same question in the tracking set to see whether the description changes in new valid collections.

## How to apply or verify

Define questions, platforms, frequency, and criteria before collecting data. Preserve the full response, date, language, context, and failures, and version changes to the set. In the report, state the number of valid results used and show examples that support the findings. LangSmith’s documentation demonstrates dataset versioning; Profound describes recurring runs in consumer experiences in its monitoring product.

## Important distinctions

Monitoring questions does not automatically measure their market demand or the exposure of all users. A response collected via API also does not necessarily reproduce the app experience. Collection failure should be distinguished from the absence of a brand. Even when a description improves after content is corrected, the sequence of events alone does not prove that the correction caused the change.
