# Prompt execution

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

A [prompt](/en/resources/glossary/prompt) execution is an individual instance in which a tracked question is submitted to an AI platform under recorded conditions. The unit includes the input, time, configuration, and result, including a failure status when applicable. Repeating the same prompt creates new executions, while simply rereading a stored response does not create another observation.

## Why it matters for marketing

Counting executions makes it possible to assess the basis of a metric before interpreting its percentage. A dashboard might show high visibility based on few responses, or mix different platforms and time periods. Marketing teams should check how many attempts received valid responses, which ones were included in the calculation, and whether the comparison used the same inclusion criteria during the period analyzed.

## Example in practice

Imagine an agency schedules twenty submissions of a question about flooring for commercial kitchens. Four end without a usable response, and eight of the sixteen valid responses mention the tracked brand. Under the stated criterion of valid responses, visibility would be 50%. The agency records the four failures separately and investigates the data collection before comparing the result.

## How to apply or verify

To verify an execution, check the collection ID, submitted text, platform, date, conversation context, and raw response. The person responsible for measurement should define how to handle refusals, incomplete responses, and retries. A retry after a failure needs to be linked to the previous attempt to avoid counting accidental duplicates as independent observations in the final report.

## Important distinctions

An execution is not the same as a user, actual market demand, or an entire conversation. A submission may trigger several internal searches without each search becoming a new execution of the tracked prompt. Measurement tools may use different criteria for valid responses. Make these criteria clear; a collection failure does not show that the brand was absent from a response.
