# Prompt

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

A prompt is input used to guide an AI system: a question, instruction, or set of information. In brand search and monitoring, it is usually the text describing a user’s need. The response also depends on conversation context, settings, and available tools; therefore, the visible text alone does not explain the entire result.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, a prompt turns a hypothesis about an audience into an observable question. Its selection determines what will be measured. A dashboard made up only of questions that favor the brand can produce high numbers and little useful information. It is better to represent real discovery, comparison, and evaluation questions, using criteria relevant to the purchase.

## Example in practice

“Which [SEO](/en/resources/glossary/seo) tools offer support in Portuguese for an agency with ten people?” is a prompt with a defined category, market, and audience. “Explain why brand X is the best” steers the response and tests something else. Both can generate mentions, but only the first investigates a comparison without naming the brand in advance.

## How to apply or verify

Record the exact text and its intent. Use language found in sales, customer service, and research, without inventing volume estimates. Separate branded questions from unbranded questions; group equivalent variations when appropriate. For comparisons over time, keep the original questions and document any changes to the context or data collection settings.

## Important distinctions

A prompt is not synonymous with a keyword, although both help study demand. Nor does a selected question reveal how many people ask it in an assistant. Monitoring observes responses produced for a defined sample. This limitation must accompany the conclusions so the team does not confuse the sample with a census of private conversations.
