# Profound’s SAGE

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

SAGE is a Profound methodology for organizing [AEO](/en/resources/glossary/aeo) improvements through a four-stage cycle: Setup, Analyze, Generate, and Engineer. The names correspond to preparing observation, analyzing gaps, producing interventions, and structuring ongoing work. It is a vendor’s operational proposal, not a technical standard for answer engines.

## Why it matters for marketing

For an agency, the methodology helps guide discussion from diagnosis to execution. Measuring answers without deciding who will correct information leaves findings unaddressed. Publishing without a baseline makes it harder to compare what happens afterward. The sequence’s value lies in requiring identifiable deliverables and continuity, while preserving human review and criteria suited to the client.

## Example in practice

Imagine a technical school whose evening program is incorrectly listed in answers about its courses. Following SAGE, the agency records questions and answers during setup. In the analysis stage, it locates an outdated cited page. During generation, it reviews the information with the school and publishes the correction. During engineering, it assigns an owner and schedules a new data collection, keeping the work completed separate from any changes observed.

## How to apply or verify

When adopting SAGE, translate each stage into an artifact: a documented sample, a prioritized list of issues, a record of delivered changes, and a monitoring routine. Specify owners, dates, and comparison conditions. Check that data collection worked before declaring a gap. The Generate stage should result in reviewed, executed work, not just suggestions.

## Important distinctions

SAGE is not a language model or a feature required to appear in AI. Its names do not establish a universal duration, tool, or approval process. Generate does not replace authorship and review; Engineer does not require model training. Repeating the cycle organizes work, but a different answer after publication does not prove the intervention caused the change.
