# Primary source

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

A primary source is material that provides first-hand information about the subject being investigated. It may be documentation from a product’s maker, a study using original data, a record, or a first-hand account. Classification depends on the question: a supplier’s page is a primary source for its stated terms, but does not by itself prove superiority over all competitors.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, consulting the source helps prevent repeating figures without context or outdated features. It also helps distinguish facts, methods, and commercial claims. Good content explains what the source actually supports and what limitations remain. This lets readers check the evidence without relying on a chain of summaries that may have changed its meaning.

## Example in practice

To confirm whether a tool offers a particular integration, the official documentation is an appropriate reference. To analyze an experimental result, look for the [original study](/en/resources/glossary/original-research) and its method. A post citing “up to 40% gain with [GEO](/en/resources/glossary/geo)” without explaining the benchmark does not offer the same basis for interpretation as the research article responsible for the figure.

## How to apply or verify

Open the source, find the passage, and check the date, version, method, and scope. Record the direct URL and access date when information may change. Cross-check sources when there is a conflict or significant commercial interest. For an AI answer, don’t rely only on the reference title: verify that the page exists and supports the associated claim.

## Important distinctions

Primary does not mean infallible, impartial, or automatically up to date. A supplier may accurately describe its offering and make a promotional comparison without sufficient evidence. Secondary sources can also be useful for interpretation and synthesis. The choice should follow the question and strength of the evidence, preserving distinctions between stated information, independent observation, and editorial conclusions.
