# Pillar page

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

A pillar page is the central page in an editorial collection about a particular topic. It presents the main concepts, steps, or decisions and directs readers to pages that explore each subtopic in greater depth. Its role combines guidance and synthesis: readers seeking an overview should get a useful answer before following the links.

## Why it matters for marketing

In content planning, a pillar page helps define the entry point for broad topics. This guides the level of detail in the guide and avoids repeating supporting content in full. It also helps assess whether the team provides enough context for people who arrive unfamiliar with the terms or specific decisions involved in the topic.

## Example in practice

Imagine a software company preparing a guide to inventory management. The first version simply lists links about counting, responsibilities, and reconciling discrepancies. During review, the team realizes readers cannot understand the inventory process. It decides to add an explanation of the steps while keeping the links to detailed instructions for each one.

## How to apply or evaluate

Define the broad question the page should answer and organize a reading sequence. Check that the sections explain the announced subtopics and that each link leads to relevant in-depth content. Test whether readers can understand the guide without opening the linked pages. Then check URLs, [anchor text](/en/resources/glossary/anchor-text), and information that needs updating when supporting content changes.

## Important distinctions

A long page does not become a pillar page just because of its length. A link index can make navigation easier without providing synthesis. A cluster is the collection of pages and their relationships; the pillar page plays one role within that collection. None of these labels guarantees that a search engine or AI system will select that URL.
