# Perplexity

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Perplexity is an AI platform whose Perplexity Search experience searches for information and produces answers accompanied by citations. This entry focuses on that search interface, which lets users consult the sources cited in an answer. The documentation also introduces distinct products, such as Computer and Comet; their functions should not automatically be attributed to a Search query.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, the question is to identify which documents support a description of a category, product, or company. A brand may appear in the text while another page provides the information used. Distinguishing mentions, sources, and recommendations helps determine whether the issue observed lies in the company’s own communications, an external reference, or the interpretation produced by the answer.

## Example in practice

Imagine a lighting manufacturer using Perplexity Search to research criteria for choosing office lighting. The answer cites an old catalog and describes a discontinued line as current. The analyst opens the reference, confirms the edition, and prioritizes updating the public catalog. This finding identifies a problematic source in that query, without proving how often it occurs in the market.

## How to apply or verify

Define questions that reflect real inquiries and record the text, date, language, and search mode used. Open the citations and check whether each document supports the associated claim, including its conditions and dates. When repeating the query, keep the scope consistent and note changes in sources. Editorial review should compare the answer with current documentation.

## Important distinctions

Perplexity Search is neither a single model nor the [Comet browser](/en/resources/glossary/comet). A [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) lets you inspect the source presented, but does not ensure that the interpretation is correct or complete. Nor does it indicate a visit, sale, or brand endorsement. The platform’s presentation of other products does not prove that their features are available in the interface and account being evaluated.
