# Parametric memory

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Parametric memory is knowledge represented in the numerical parameters a model learned during training. These parameters contribute to generating responses even without consulting external documents. The original [RAG](/en/resources/glossary/rag) study uses this term for the pretrained generator component, in contrast to the document index that provides information retrieved at query time.

## Why it matters for marketing

This distinction helps marketing teams assess requests for corrections. Changing the positioning on a website does not directly alter the parameters of a third-party model. A team that finds outdated descriptions needs to identify whether the response consulted recent sources and decide how to provide current information, without assuming that publishing an update is equivalent to retraining.

## Example in practice

Suppose a manufacturer drops the phrase “economy line” and adopts “professional line.” In hypothetical tests without search or supplied documents, a model still produces the old classification. The team records this behavior as consistent with learned knowledge, without claiming which text it originated from, and starts providing the current positioning for tasks that require this information.

## How to apply or verify

Check the model version, enabled tools, and content sent in the call. Compare responses without [retrieval](/en/resources/glossary/information-retrieval) to responses given a current source, keeping the question the same. This contrast helps identify dependence on external information, but does not by itself reveal the content of the parameters. Changes in behavior need to be assessed across more than one attempt.

## Important distinctions

Parametric memory is not a searchable folder of learned pages, nor a guarantee of faithful reproduction of [training data](/en/resources/glossary/training-data). It also differs from conversation memory maintained by an application. In RAG, retrieved documents can update the information available for a response without updating the generator’s weights; training or [fine-tuning](/en/resources/glossary/fine-tuning) mechanisms follow a different technical process.
