# Off-page SEO

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Off-page [SEO](/en/resources/glossary/seo) is the set of activities focused on a company’s presence and references outside its own website, with the aim of supporting its discovery and evaluation in search engines. It includes earning relevant links, participating in communities, and maintaining information on external sources. Off-site is used in a similar sense; the specific scope should be explained by the service provider.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this area involves relationships with people and publishers who make their own decisions. A PR firm can present useful information to an editorial team, but it cannot control that team’s assessment. Google discovers pages through links and recognizes different forms of promotion. That is why the quality and relevance of a reference deserve attention before the number of domains.

## Example in practice

Consider an equipment manufacturer that publishes an [original study](/en/resources/glossary/original-research) on electricity consumption. An industry magazine analyzes the methodology and includes a link to the research. The team can record this reference and the visits it receives. Paying for hundreds of links on pages unrelated to the subject would be a different activity, with the risk of violating Google’s policies.

## How to apply or verify

List relevant references, open their pages, and check the context, destination, date, and type of publication. Separate editorial coverage, directory listings, partnerships, and advertising; record link qualifications when there is sponsorship. Assess what readers can learn and how they can reach the original material. Investigate ranking or traffic changes without attributing every movement to a single link.

## Important distinctions

Off-page SEO does not mean buying a reputation or accumulating links indiscriminately. Google’s policy considers creating links primarily to manipulate rankings to be spam and provides for appropriate treatment of advertising and sponsorship. An external mention can exist without a [backlink](/en/resources/glossary/backlink), and a backlink may not indicate endorsement. References outside the site also do not guarantee a recommendation in an [AI response](/en/resources/glossary/ai-response).
