# nosnippet

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Nosnippet is a directive that restricts page previews in search engines that recognize it. On Google, it prevents text snippets and video previews in results, as well as direct use of the content as input for [AI Overviews](/en/resources/glossary/ai-overviews) and [AI Mode](/en/resources/glossary/ai-mode). It is declared in the robots meta tag or the X-Robots-Tag HTTP header.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, the decision involves how much content can appear before a visit to the site. Applying nosnippet indiscriminately can affect how pages are presented and their eligibility as supporting links in Google's AI features, which require snippet eligibility. The team should define this goal for each page, considering the information it intends to restrict.

## Example in practice

Imagine a consultancy that publishes a hiring guide and wants to keep its page in traditional Google results without showing snippets from the guide. A hypothetical audit finds only a meta description, with no nosnippet. The team requests the directive for that URL and notes that it also intends to prevent direct use in AI Overviews and AI Mode.

## How to apply or verify

For this guide, development could include a meta tag with name="[googlebot](/en/resources/glossary/googlebot)" and content="nosnippet" to target the rule to Google. [SEO](/en/resources/glossary/seo) should check the [HTML](/en/resources/glossary/html-the-web-s-markup-language) received by Googlebot in URL Inspection and whether [crawling](/en/resources/glossary/crawling) is allowed. The team would then need to monitor processing after a new crawl; the edit alone does not prove the change has been applied.

## Important distinctions

Nosnippet is not the same as [noindex](/en/resources/glossary/noindex) and does not block access to the page. Data-nosnippet restricts specific parts of the text. On Google, a static thumbnail may still appear; Bing also describes suppressing the description and thumbnail, where applicable. These effects do not constitute a universal prohibition on training or use by other AI systems.
