# noarchive

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Noarchive is a directive historically used to prevent a cached copy of a page from being offered in search results. Its scope depends on the search engine. In the documentation consulted in October 2026, Google states that it no longer uses it, since the [cache](/en/resources/glossary/cache) link no longer exists. Bing still documents effects of its own for the directive.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, keeping an old rule without reviewing its support can create an incorrect expectation of control. Bing describes noarchive as preventing caching, links in Chat and Copilot, and use in training Microsoft's [generative AI](/en/resources/glossary/generative-ai) foundation models. This requires a decision about that ecosystem, without assuming equivalent effects in Google Search.

## Example in practice

Imagine a manufacturer that wants to restrict Chat and Copilot from using its catalog while preserving its presence in Bing search. A hypothetical review finds noarchive alongside nocache in the catalog. Since Bing states that it treats this combination as nocache, the team requests a review of the combination before considering the noarchive objective met.

## How to apply or check

For this catalog, [SEO](/en/resources/glossary/seo) and development teams should check the meta tags and X-Robots-Tag headers returned by the URL. Bing's documentation allows the meta tag to target bingbot. The team would need to verify [crawler](/en/resources/glossary/crawler) access, conflicts, and subsequent collection, and record the requested configuration. Behavior in traditional search and Copilot should be monitored separately.

## Important distinctions

Noarchive does not delete external copies or automatically revoke previous uses. It is also not equivalent to [noindex](/en/resources/glossary/noindex) or crawl blocking. Google classifies it among historical rules ignored by Search following the discontinuation of the cache link; this status does not automatically apply to Bing. In that search engine, nocache has a different scope; its precedence means you should not assume the combination imposes a greater restriction.
