# NLWeb

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

NLWeb is a project of open protocols and tools for creating natural-language query interfaces for websites. The reference implementation uses structured information, such as [Schema.org](/en/resources/glossary/schema-org), and presents responses in JSON using that vocabulary. The repository documents [MCP](/en/resources/glossary/model-context-protocol) support and a core method, ask, that lets users ask questions about a site's content.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing and content, the useful question is which information in the collection could support a conversation with visitors or agents. A collection of products or recipes needs consistent attributes to answer filters and comparisons. Evaluating NLWeb involves checking the source of this data, whether it is up to date, and the quality of responses, as well as the appearance of the conversational component.

## Example in practice

Imagine a recipe website experimenting with NLWeb to find dishes without dairy products. The ask query returns a recipe whose structured list includes butter. This observation would lead the editorial team to check the published ingredients and how the query was processed before recommending that recipe as suitable for the restriction, applying the same criteria during review.

## How to apply or verify

Select questions with verifiable criteria and compare the returned objects with the pages and records that feed them. The technical owner should identify the code version, model provider, storage, and ingestion process used. For changed data, check whether the query receives the current information and preserve evidence of any discrepancies.

## Important distinctions

The project describes its code as a demonstration of an approach, not as a definitive implementation for the entire web. Using Schema.org does not, by itself, install a conversational interface. MCP support makes it possible to expose queries to compatible clients, but does not guarantee adoption by any assistant. A response about products also does not prove that checkout or payment is supported.
