# New mention in an external source

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

In Profound's terminology, a new mention in an external source is the addition of a brand to an article already cited by AI that did not previously mention it. The object is the specific page observed in the responses, not any publication from that domain. To verify the addition, compare versions or record reliable evidence that the brand was previously absent.

## Why it matters for marketing

This record makes it possible to track a PR effort without conflating information submission, editorial decisions, and publication. The team can suggest a relevant case or provide the author with verifiable data. The observed result is the addition to the document; any later appearance of the brand in responses needs to be tracked separately and does not, by itself, establish causality.

## Example in practice

Suppose an external guide to museum accessibility, cited in an [AI response](/en/resources/glossary/ai-response), omits an institution that offers audio description. The institution provides the editor with details about the program and its service conditions. Days later, the guide adds a paragraph naming the institution, without a link. The team compares the screenshots and records a new mention, while noting that no [backlink](/en/resources/glossary/backlink) was added.

## How to apply or verify

Keep the previous version, URL, date of the check, and the passage published afterward. Verify the brand identity, relevance, and conditions described; an incorrect addition requires review. If there is a hyperlink, check its destination separately. To study the impact on AI, repeat documented questions and preserve complete responses, without automatically attributing any variation to the article edit.

## Important distinctions

A new mention differs from updating information about a brand that was already present. It also differs from a backlink: naming a brand does not create a navigable link; Google's guidance says crawlable links generally use an anchor element with an href attribute. An external addition does not guarantee [indexing](/en/resources/glossary/indexing), future [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation), recommendation, or human access, even when the article has already been referenced.
