# Navigational prompt

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

A navigational [prompt](/en/resources/glossary/prompt) is a request to reach an intended destination, such as a company website, its login page, or a specific document. The primary need is to find the right path, not discover what options are available. This category adapts search’s navigational intent to requests made to assistants, taking into account the destination described in the conversation.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, destination accuracy affects people who are already looking for the organization or its content. Directing a support request to the sales page creates friction even when the brand name is correct. The team can check names, addresses, and public paths so that access and support information match the stated goal.

## Example in practice

Imagine a student asking for a school’s certificate-issuing portal. The response points to the institutional page, even though there is a separate address for certificates. When the student opens the link, they find only information about courses. The school decides to make the portal path explicit on its help page and test that specific request again.

## How to apply or verify

To verify, identify the intended destination and open the provided address, checking the domain, page, and function. Record redirects and any authentication requirements. Use the organization’s own sources to validate access paths. Google’s guidelines describe Website queries as requests for specific sites or pages; applying this to prompts also requires interpreting the conversation’s context.

## Important distinctions

Mentioning a brand does not make a prompt navigational: asking about its reputation may seek an evaluation. Asking for a store’s address may seek an in-person visit, depending on context. Finding the right portal does not mean you have permission to access an account. Navigation and information-seeking can coexist in a request; the taxonomy does not guarantee the correct URL.
