# Multimodal AI

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Multimodal AI is [artificial intelligence](/en/resources/glossary/artificial-intelligence) that works with more than one data modality, such as text, images, audio, or video. A model can receive different modalities, produce different outputs, or combine both capabilities. For example, it can analyze an image alongside a written instruction and respond in text. The specific support depends on the model and interface.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, multimodality makes it possible to evaluate materials whose information is distributed across words and visual or audio elements. Before requesting an analysis of a creative asset, the team needs to know whether the system receives the original file or only a transcript. This difference determines which questions are relevant and which details still require direct human inspection.

## Example in practice

Imagine a food brand checking an ad that shows a package. The text describes the sugar-free version, but the photograph shows the regular version. The team provides an image and an instruction to a model with visual input and asks it to check whether they match. If it identifies the discrepancy, the person responsible reviews the photo before approving the asset.

## How to apply or verify

Confirm which formats and modalities the interface accepts. Prepare a test where the answer depends on a detail in the file, such as the variant name on the package. Compare the analysis with human observation and record the file submitted, the transformations applied, and the response. A plausible result may come solely from the text of the instruction.

## Important distinctions

Being multimodal does not mean accepting all modalities or formats, or guaranteeing that every detail will be read correctly. A model with image and text input may generate only text as output. Converting audio into a transcript before querying a text model is a processing pipeline; that step alone does not demonstrate that the model interprets the original sound.
