# Microsoft Copilot

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Microsoft Copilot is AI assistance offered by Microsoft across different conversational and work experiences. It can support creation, editing, summarization, and research, depending on the product and app used. The name does not identify a single configuration: the documentation distinguishes the conversational app from assistance built into tools such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this difference determines what a response allows you to conclude. Revising text in Word and observing a public search summary are different activities, even when both use the Copilot name. The brief should identify the app, materials provided, and expected outcome. This avoids treating an internal content review as evidence of public visibility.

## Example in practice

Imagine a writer using Copilot in Word, on an account where the feature is available, to adapt an announcement based on attached notes. The draft turns a benefit conditional on an annual subscription into an advantage of any plan. She compares the wording with the notes and corrects the condition before sending the text for editorial approval.

## How to apply or verify

Record the experience used, the account, and the documents that make up the task context. Check whether the intended feature is available in that configuration and compare the result with the materials provided. When reviewing a campaign, validate names, commercial terms, and verifiable claims. The person responsible for the content decides which suggestions make it into the final version.

## Important distinctions

Microsoft Copilot is not synonymous with [Copilot Search in Bing](/en/resources/glossary/copilot-search) or with every assistant called a copilot. Features, limits, and availability vary across apps and plans; a test in one experience does not prove identical behavior in others. The commercial name alone also does not indicate the underlying model, the data accessed, or the permissions assigned to a task.
