# Mention update

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

A mention update is a revision to an already published reference to a brand to correct or update specific information. This may be a product description, address, name, or commercial terms on a third-party page. In Profound’s [AI search](/en/resources/glossary/ai-search) glossary, mention refresh refers to this editorial action on an existing source.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, the concept helps determine whether to seek new coverage or correct what is already circulating. An outdated description can lead to an unsuitable comparison even when it cites the correct name. Priorities should take into account the error, its relevance to the reader’s decision, and whether the information to be changed can be substantiated.

## Example in practice

Imagine a language school whose profile in a local guide still says that classes are in person only. The school shows the editor the official page for its remote learning option and asks for that passage to be corrected. After the edit, the team archives the previous and current versions, recording the change to the described service format.

## How to apply or verify

Identify the URL, passage, and editorial contact before requesting a change. Provide verifiable evidence and respect the publisher’s decision. After receiving a response, check the page as readers can access it, including any copies. Confirmation of the request does not replace reading the revised text; separately monitor any [AI response](/en/resources/glossary/ai-response) that still repeats the old description.

## Important distinctions

Updating a mention does not mean securing another publication or changing a legitimate review just because the brand dislikes it. Nor does it prove [reindexing](/en/resources/glossary/reindexing), an update to [training data](/en/resources/glossary/training-data), or immediate use of the new version by an assistant. A recent date on the page, without a change to the relevant passage, is not enough to show that the information was actually corrected.
