# Mention frequency

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Mention frequency is the count of identified occurrences of a brand name in the analyzed set. Using a text occurrence as the unit, three appearances in the same response count three times. The report needs to state what it counts, which variations it recognizes, and how it handles repetitions. It can show the total or an average per response, as long as it identifies that unit.

## Why it matters for marketing

The count helps marketing distinguish a brief reference from a response that returns to the brand in the text. However, the repeated name may appear in criticism, comparisons, or redundant lists. Before interpreting frequency as favorable prominence, read the excerpts and check response lengths. Formatting changes can also alter the count without increasing presence across questions.

## Example in practice

Imagine an instrument store with three valid responses: the first names the brand four times, the second once, and the third not at all. That makes five occurrences, an average of 1.67 per response, and presence in two of three responses. The analyst notes that three occurrences are in a comparison table. They decide to report this concentration, avoiding the claim that the brand appeared in five responses.

## How to apply or verify

Establish whether the count includes only the body or also titles, tables, and the source block. Define spellings, product names, and criteria for namesakes, preserving the excerpts. Test the counter on a manually reviewed sample. For comparisons, report the total number of valid responses, period, platform, and average; record failures separately so they do not artificially reduce frequency.

## Important distinctions

[Presence rate](/en/resources/glossary/ai-presence-rate) counts each response at most once, regardless of repetitions. Frequency adds up occurrences according to the stated rule; [share of voice](/en/resources/glossary/ai-share-of-voice) also requires a basis for comparing brands. Profound's documentation acknowledges multiple mentions in one response, but that does not standardize other reports. [Citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation), recommendation, and commercial influence require additional evidence beyond repetition of the name.
