# max-snippet

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

Max-snippet is a directive that sets the character limit for a page’s text snippet in search results. Google and Bing document its use in meta tags and the X-Robots-Tag header. In Google, the value also limits how much content can be used as direct input for [AI Overviews](/en/resources/glossary/ai-overviews) and [AI Mode](/en/resources/glossary/ai-mode), with documented exceptions.

## Why it matters for marketing

For a content team, this limit helps assess the preview’s length without automatically removing the page from the index. The choice should reflect the text the company is willing to make available in this placement. A small number does not guarantee more visits, a higher ranking, or a specific preview: the search engine still selects the snippet.

## Example in practice

Consider a store that publishes an explanation of coffee machine warranties and wants to limit its Google preview to 120 characters. In the hypothetical review, the [HTML](/en/resources/glossary/html-the-web-s-markup-language) contains max-snippet:-1, which leaves the length to the search engine’s discretion. The team requests max-snippet:120 on this page and records the reason: to limit exposure of the explanatory text before a visit.

## How to apply or check it

For this warranty page, development could declare content="max-snippet:120" in a robots meta tag. [SEO](/en/resources/glossary/seo) would check the value in the HTML accessible to the [crawler](/en/resources/glossary/crawler) and look for potentially conflicting rules in headers. Subsequent verification would depend on recrawling and processing. The URL, search engine, and date should be recorded, without treating the observed result as a measurement of all systems.

## Important distinctions

The limit counts characters, not words, and does not control image or video previews. In Google and Bing, zero suppresses the snippet; minus one leaves the length unlimited by the publisher. Google notes specific permissions, such as content provided in [structured data](/en/resources/glossary/structured-data) or license agreements. Max-snippet does not establish a general rule against AI training.
