# LCP: Largest Contentful Paint

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

LCP stands for Largest Contentful Paint. The metric records when the largest eligible content element is rendered in the page’s visible area, relative to the start of navigation. This element may be an image, a block of text, or another type specified in the definition. LCP is one of the [Core Web Vitals](/en/resources/glossary/core-web-vitals) and describes one aspect of the loading experience perceived by visitors.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, LCP helps assess whether prominent content appears in time for people arriving at the page. On a landing page, a large main image or a slow response can delay this moment. The metric helps investigate the observed element and its dependencies. By itself, it does not indicate whether the message is persuasive or whether a visitor can submit the form.

## Example in practice

Imagine a store whose main product image appears several seconds after the text. A test identifies this image as the LCP element and shows that its download starts late. The team asks development to investigate how the file is discovered and delivered. They test the same page and conditions again, checking the measured element before attributing the improvement to the change.

## How to apply or check

Check the element responsible for LCP and the conditions for each test, including device, network, and [cache](/en/resources/glossary/cache). For real-world data, web.dev recommends an LCP of 2.5 seconds or less at the 75th percentile of visits, reported separately for mobile and desktop. Lab tests help locate delays in response, resources, and rendering. Record the source of the measurement to compare equivalent conditions.

## Important distinctions

LCP differs from [FCP](/en/resources/glossary/fcp-first-contentful-paint), which records the first content to be painted, and does not mean that the page has finished loading completely. The largest eligible element may also not be the most important content to a person. [INP](/en/resources/glossary/inp-interaction-to-next-paint) measures responsiveness to interactions, and [CLS](/en/resources/glossary/cls-cumulative-layout-shift) measures visual stability. A good LCP does not replace these assessments or guarantee conversions, search rankings, or citations in AI.
