# Knowledge staleness

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

Knowledge staleness is the persistence in a system’s answers or materials of information that was once true but is no longer valid. This may include an old price, a discontinued product, or a changed condition. In AI, training knowledge and consulted sources have different dates and limitations; observing an outdated answer does not automatically show which of these stages caused the error.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing, this problem calls for checking whether statements about the brand match the current offer and the relevant context. The company’s own page or an external publication may retain outdated information. Identifying a verifiable reference helps prioritize a concrete correction, without assuming that updating a URL will immediately change every model or every answer about the organization.

## Example in practice

Imagine a manufacturer that discontinued its Vento Azul fan line and finds an answer presenting the model as available. The cited link points to its own product page, which still shows the old offer. The team confirms the discontinuation and updates the status on that same page. It then monitors new answers without claiming that the correction has already eliminated all outdated information.

## How to apply or verify

Record the claim, answer date, surface, and available references. Compare them with current information and document when the condition changed. Correct sources under your control and propose substantiated corrections to third parties when needed. Search tools may provide information beyond the model’s cutoff, depending on how they work; check what was actually consulted, and treat cases without a source as pending investigation.

## Important distinctions

Outdated information is not necessarily a fabricated claim: a fact may have been correct in another period. Regional pricing and version changes also require context before declaring an error. Updating content is not the same as retraining a model, nor does it guarantee new access or selection. A recent date on the page is useful only when it reflects an actual review of the information presented.
