# JSON-LD

Reviewed on 2026-10-06.

## What it means

JSON-LD stands for JavaScript Object Notation for Linked Data. It is a format for expressing data and relationships in a JSON-based structure. On web pages, it usually appears in a script block with the type application/ld+json. The block’s content is a representation of data, not an instruction to run interface features.

## Why it matters for marketing

For marketing and [SEO](/en/resources/glossary/seo), separating this representation from the visible text can make markup easier to maintain. The key is to ensure both versions continue to say the same thing. When a CMS updates a title, date, or product but the JSON-LD remains outdated, the page provides conflicting information, even if it looks correct.

## Example in practice

An article page has the title “How to compare tools” and identifies the person responsible for it. Its JSON-LD can use Article, headline, and author to represent these facts. If an empty CMS field generates a fictional person or the date changes with each visit, the format is still JSON-LD, but the content no longer accurately represents the publication.

## How to apply or check

Validate the JSON and the vocabulary used. Check the fields in the served [HTML](/en/resources/glossary/html-the-web-s-markup-language) and in the rendered document when it is generated with JavaScript. Compare names, URLs, and dates with the published content. A useful test can find data discrepancies or missing markup; it is not enough to check whether a script with the expected type exists.

## Important distinctions

JSON-LD is different from [Schema.org](/en/resources/glossary/schema-org): the former is a format, while the latter can provide the vocabulary. It is also not a format required by every AI system. Google recommends JSON-LD for [structured data](/en/resources/glossary/structured-data) when feasible, but technical validity does not guarantee special display. False information remains false in any serialization.
