# Inverted pyramid

Reviewed on 2026-10-07.

## What it means

The inverted pyramid is an editorial structure that organizes text from the most important information to supporting details. The opening presents the essentials; the following sections add explanations and context in order of relevance. Importance depends on the subject and the reader’s needs, not just the writer’s preference or the sequence of events.

## Why it matters for marketing

In marketing, this structure helps create announcements, service pages, and updates that need to be understood quickly. A service change may require the date, affected audience, and guidance before presenting the internal reasons. Ordering these elements prevents readers from having to work through an institutional narrative to understand how the change affects their routine.

## A practical example

Imagine a brand announcing that its pickup location will move to a new address on Monday. The draft opens with the company’s expansion and only gives the new location at the end. The person responsible reorganizes the announcement: the change, date, and address come first; pickup instructions follow; the story of the expansion closes the text.

## How to apply or check

List what the audience needs to know to make the main decision, and rank the rest by usefulness. Read the opening on its own and check whether it conveys the event, its scope, and the necessary guidance. When shortening the announcement, remove secondary details without separating the date from the address or removing essential service conditions.

## Important distinctions

The inverted pyramid does not require all content to follow the same order. Narratives, demonstrations, and instructions may need a different sequence to be understood. It also does not mean simply giving a short answer at the beginning: it establishes a hierarchy throughout the text. It is an editorial choice, with no guarantee of ranking, [retrieval](/en/resources/glossary/information-retrieval), or [citation](/en/resources/glossary/ai-citation) by AI.
